My personal philosophy on life and business can is similar to LinkedIn.  It's all in the relationship...  Which I have been neglecting as of late, outside influences have led my business and personal relationships to falter.  This has given me a sharp reminder of how important relationships and connecting with people is to my life and well being.

LinkedIn has been a phenomenal tool for me and I like some of  the innovation that have been added.  Of course, not sure that innovations are right word for them, but I like the functionality that comes with the widgets and the photos are a fun touch!

As I add to my business development network, I am working to incorporate the numerous business and social networks that are out there.  There are so many to use and most have some sort of overlap.  I am going to be working with social and business networks to help me with my business development at Parker.   As I work with these networks I will post my opinions and what works and what doesn't.  Any comments that you may have are welcome and appreciated!

How do you want to be remembered?  This is a very powerful question and one that people tend to think about the older they get, but is relevant no matter your age.  This not only applies to when you are gone (dead), but when you leave the room.  As a salesperson for Parker Technical and a political candidate there are certain perceptions that I want people to have of me.  The personal interactions that I have, the things I do in the community and how I handle myself in all aspects of my life combine to form my reputation and the perception that people have of me.  I don't do community work so people will think better of me, but I do want to have an excellent reputation and I want people and clients to want to hang around with me and do business with me.

One of the best things you can do for yourself and your business is to ask people what your reputation is and continue to build based on feedback from others.

Home Sweet Home (NEW VERSION)

As usual my sense of timing is impeccable!  In the middle of a political campaign, kids going back to school, typical everyday life stuff and I have to go and switch jobs!  Sometimes I wonder what I am thinking.  This was a no-brainer though, while I loved Greythorn, especially the people (Cilla, Ginger, Ben, James, et. al.) the opportunity to run a sales division was too much to turn down.

Parker is an exceptional company and I already feel at home, the people are first rate and the challenge is extraordinary!  I want to say thank you to everyone at Greythorn, it was fantastic!

So, keep a look out for new events, more political stuff and my work on my sales book!

Naval officer?? BC for Council

A wonderful, well written, stellar bit of journalism today in the Redmond Reporter.  It was on a subject near and dear to my heart, which just happens to be me!  The Redmond Reporter's Chris Smith did an interview with me on my bid for the Redmond City Council position 3.  Chris did a wonderful job and I appreciate his hard work and efforts. 

My father-in-law (a former Naval Supply Officer) and I were discussing being described as a former Navy officer.  As I was a non-commissioned officer in the Navy, this can be a subject of debate and can be confusing.  My rank in the Navy was that of FC1 or Petty Office First Class, Fire Controlman.  This is different than a commissioned officer (i.e. Lt, Commander, Captain, etc) and I thought that this distinction important enough to highlight.  My support and respect for members of military is huge and after 11 years in the Navy I know what it means to be a proud member of our nation's military.  Check out this link for more info on rankings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petty_Officer

Better to be smart or lucky?

Most "luck" is self created and Microsoft is no exception, you don't get to be Microsoft by luck alone!  This is not to say that other companies’ poor business decisions or lack of vision for the market did not benefit Microsoft.  It definitely did, but you still have to know what you are doing in order to capitalize on these moments.  While I am not always a fan of Microsoft products and scratch my head on some of their product/program decisions, they are right more often than not over the years and have put themselves in a position to dominate the market with or without luck.

While space may be scarce and growth cuts into profits, continuing to hire excellent people will never totally stop.  Especially at a company as dependent on its people resources such as Microsoft!  Of course, as someone who works to locate the best of the best, I have a vested interest in continued hiring, but companies that want to keep growing and innovating will hire the best people available.
